Support Modification
Modify Child Support or Alimony Orders in Georgia

Life circumstances change — and when they do, your support order may need to change too. Whether you've experienced a significant change in income, employment, or family situation, Ufyle's paralegals can help you prepare the documents needed to modify your existing child support or alimony order in Georgia.
When Can You Modify a Support Order?
In Georgia, a support order can be modified when there has been a substantial change in circumstances since the original order was entered. Courts generally require that the change be significant and ongoing — not temporary.
Grounds for Child Support Modification
- Significant increase or decrease in either parent's income
- Job loss or change in employment status
- Change in the child's needs (medical, educational, etc.)
- Change in the child's primary residence or custody arrangement
- The child reaches the age of majority or becomes emancipated
- It has been at least 2 years since the last order and the new calculation differs by 15% or more
Grounds for Alimony Modification
- Substantial change in either party's financial circumstances
- Recipient spouse remarries (terminates alimony in Georgia)
- Recipient spouse cohabitates with a new partner
- Payor spouse experiences significant income reduction
- Retirement of the paying spouse
The Modification Process
- Step 1: Gather documentation of the changed circumstances (pay stubs, tax returns, termination letters, etc.)
- Step 2: Ufyle prepares your Petition to Modify Child Support or Alimony
- Step 3: File the petition in the Superior Court that issued the original order
- Step 4: Serve the other party with the modification papers
- Step 5: Attend a hearing or submit an agreed modification order
Agreed vs. Contested Modifications
If both parties agree to the modification, the process is much faster and less expensive. Ufyle can prepare a Consent Order for Modification that both parties sign, which is then submitted to the court for approval. If the other party contests the modification, a hearing will be required.
Don't Overpay — or Underpay
An outdated support order can cost you thousands. Whether you need to reduce your payments or increase support for your child, Ufyle can help you file the right documents quickly and affordably.
